Missing AI compliance deadlines results in fines and enforcement actions. EU AI Act fines reach €35M or 7% of global turnover. Colorado ADMT law fines are up to $20,000 per violation (AG-enforced, no private right of action). NYC Local Law 144 fines are $500 for a first violation and $500-$1,500 for each subsequent violation. India DPDPA fines reach ₹250 crore (~$30M USD). The cost of compliance is almost always lower than the cost of non-compliance.

Who is affected

Any business that: (1) uses AI tools (even just ChatGPT or Copilot), (2) serves customers in regulated jurisdictions (EU, US states, India, etc.), or (3) processes personal data with AI algorithms. If in doubt: yes, these laws apply to you.

What to do right now

1

Confirm your EU AI Act Art. 50 transparency disclosures are already live — that deadline passed August 2, 2026

2

If you make AI-assisted consequential decisions about Colorado residents: prepare for the ADMT law (SB 26-189), effective January 1, 2027

3

If you use high-risk AI (Annex III) reaching EU users: work toward the December 2, 2027 EU AI Act deadline — do not wait

4

If you hire in NYC: NYC Local Law 144 is already in force

5

If you hire in Illinois: Illinois AIVIA is already in force (and the separate HB 3773 Human Rights Act amendment took effect January 1, 2026)
